Can social media actually be used to solve real-life problems? Last weekend I got to work firsthand with the creative team at Minnesota DECA’s State Career Development Conference. The conference hosted thousands of high school students from around the state. There was a problem though- in the past, the conference had a problem with students breaking curfew. The creative team found a unique solution to this problem using social media and #DECAafterDark was born.

#DECAafterDark consists of Twitter challenges that members participate in after curfew in their hotel rooms. Right at curfew, the @mndeca account pushes out challenges such as:

These challenges also featured great prizes for the winners, which helped increase participation. The results were amazing, #DECAaferdark tweets made over 19,000 impressions in just 48 hours. Because students were so engaged in the #DECAafterdark challenges, the problem of students breaking curfew disappeared. Check out some of the best vines and photos we received in our flashback video.
